Abstract
Technological and institutional innovations in Freiburg’s building sector give insights into dynamics of regional sustainability transitions. Since the early 1990s a wide range of factors have played an important role in the transition
of Freiburgs’ building sector: innovative policy and civic participation approaches, large-scale urban building projects as well as the integration
of regional companies and research institutions. The new built “eco”-districts Rieselfeld and Vauban as well as the retrofitted highrise building “Buggi 50” are globally recognised examples for innovative energy-efficient building and sustainable urban development. Nevertheless, there are still challenges in linking
energy and social issues and retrofitting of existing buildings in Freiburg.
