Abstract
Many researchers state that learning, especially joint learning, plays a vital role in sustainability transitions and implementation. However, little is known about how these processes occur and how they can be fostered in transdisciplinary research. While theoretical approaches to learning in transitions have been developed in recent years, even less is known about transdisciplinary knowledge production involving different types of knowledge, such as scientific knowledge and locally specific experience. Our contribution has two objectives: first, we introduce an interdisciplinary conceptual framework that addresses joint knowledge exchange and individual learning, based on two existing frameworks. Secondly, we use this framework to investigate whether, when and how learning as the integration of different forms of knowledge occurs in transition workshops. Specifically, we examine a workshop on mobility transitions with local decision-makers from a city administration. Additionally, we reflect on how future joint learning processes can be fostered based on the insights provided.
