Abstract

The collective book L’urbain par l’image : collaborations between visual arts and social sciences (Creaphis, March 2020) opens the black box of collaborative practices between researchers in social sciences and artists, of their temporalities, material arrangements, objects, techniques, references and categories. Its deliberately experimental layout was produced with an editor who is particularly attentive to the specificities of each documented collaboration and their visual dimension. In this article, we describe and analyze the making of such an editorial object, the aesthetic and mediation choices it activates, which offers a critical entry point for questioning the transformations of the status of images in urban research and the visual arts. In this fields the analysis of the multiples linkages within collaborative works in their different contexts and to their temporalities, helps to understand the potentials of images and its actualizations.
