    Abstract

Ab initio local-spin-density (LSD) calculations have been used to test the possible occurrence of spin waves in the deeper layers of ultrathin ?-Fe films on Cu(001) substrates proposed recently by Qian et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 227204 (2001)]. We find that spin waves are always unstable with respect to collinear configurations and that the thickness and temperature dependence of the total magnetization reported by Qian et al. can be explained on the basis of the collinear LSD results.
