Abstract
Thirty-five years ago, Wolfgang Klein dreamed of a small machine that would make it easier to read the overflowing number of scientific texts. The problem mentioned by Klein of the imbalance between production and the possibilities for reception still exists, even though such a machine is now available. It is argued that the use of this machine is problematic due to unresolved questions. Against the background of the assumed inevitability of the text explosion the International Journal of Multilingualism is used as an example to demonstrate the increase in published pages, the article finally pleads with a smile in favour of making responsible use of the technical means currently available.
