Abstract

In this study we offer a brief overview of the history of migrants to Austria and their current situation as well as of its legal and institutional background. The study gives a detailed account of the linguistic and cultural integration of schoolchildren. As is the case in numerous other countries as well, in Austria the question of integration is above all centred on the acquisition of German, thus emphasis is placed on the possibilities of achieving linguistic integration. We will outline the relevant laws and regulations with particular regard to the situation of Ukrainian children. In addition to this presentation, the impact of the institutional practices coming into effect starting from the school year 2018/2019 and primarily due to political decisions (tests to measure German language competency, remedial German language school classes and courses) will be discussed, as well as criticisms voiced both by those active in teaching and experts.
