Abstract

Within the last 20 years, polyamory (a form of relationship where it is possible, valid and worthwhile to maintain intimate and sexual relationships with multiple partners simultaneously) has become a matter of scientific research. Since about a decade, also mainstream media has shown interest for the topic at the crossroad of love and sexuality – and the emotional, societal, legal and religious challenges that come with it. The importance of media coverage lies in the (supposed) novelty, in addition the audience often draws self-references on this controversial topic. What people, read, hear and see is what they believe polyamory is about. The by the Austrian Science Fund financed project Polyamory in media, social and identity perspective, a media analysis on 360 newspaper and magazine articles published in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, has been conducted. The results provide a first view on love and life history, the classification, social acceptance, and suspected demand for legal and religious recognition of multiple relationships by its media representation.
