Reflections on Teaching Sociology to Austrian Police Officers

Publications: Contribution to bookChapterPeer Reviewed

Abstract

In addition to my core work in teaching and research at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Vienna, I also worked as a sociology teacher in police education in Austria for 20 years. This chapter provides an account of this work and an insight into some of the experiences I gained in the process. The report deals in particular with the status of sociology in the syllabus covered in the basic training of commissioned police offices, the sociology curriculum, and the problems, ups and downs of implementing this curriculum. Further reflections on the matter are also presented. The report also contains information on the academisation of the training of commissioned police officers in Austria.
