Abstract

This chapter serves as the introduction to the book. It discusses the significance of the Olympic games, the city of Tokyo and its significant changes from the first Olympic game in 1964 to 2020, as well as the state of the nation. It concludes with the importance and motivation of this edited volume and discusses how the implementation of and work towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics provide an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese society, economy, and politics.
