Abstract
Background: Virtual reality (VR) can provide realistic training scenarios for socioemotional skills. Objective: This systematic review provides an overview of the current research on VR-based training of socioemotional skills. Method: We conducted a systematic literature search on PSYNDEX, PsycINFO, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science, following PRISMA guidelines. We included German and English empirical studies on VR-based socioemotional skill training for people of any age with and without mental disorders. Results: In the end, 11 studies were included, most of which examined clinical samples. Methodological quality was assessed as high in 10 studies. Conclusions: The review supports the utility of VR-based socioemotional skill training, though the current state of research does not yet allow clear conclusions regarding its efficacy.
